Rationale:
This lesson will help children identify /p/, the phoneme represented by P. Students will learn to recognize /p/ in spoken words by learning a sound analogy(popcorn popping) and the letter symbol P, practice finding /p/ in words, and apply phoneme awareness with /p/ in phonetic cue reading by distinguishing rhyming words from beginning letters.

Procedures:
Say “English language is a funny thing. There are may rules we cannot explain. The letter P is used in many words. It looks like an airpod if you look closely. When we say the letter P, like in the word popcorn our lips touch and we making a popping sound to say the letter P. Today we are going to work on learning to hear the sound of /p/ and
Ask the classroom “what does the letter P sound like?” Write the letter P on the board to review or teach background knowledge.
Say “Lets pretend we hear popcorn popping. Everyone say the word pop. Notice how your upper and lower lip touch each other and make a popping sound when pronouncing the word pop. It is from the letter P!”
A fun thing to do is a tongue tickler. “Peter’s last name is Piper. Peter went picking. He went to find pickled peppers. Lets try our tongue ticker, Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Everyone try it three times. So many /p/ sounds!”
Now lets try an activity. “I am going to show you a list of words and ask you what they are by looking at the first letter. Ready?” Ask each word in t

Purpose of Activity:
The purpose of this activity is for students to understand how to pronounce /p/ and identify the letter in words. Students will be able to determine the letter P in the whole word by hearing the sound and looking at the visual. They will look at pictures and determine which ones start with the letter P and how to write the word on the worksheet given.
